2nd Grassroots Football Tournament underway in Kohima

KOHIMA — The second Grassroots Football Tournament, organised by the Kohima District Football Association (KDFA) under the aegis of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), began on Friday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS) Kohima.

A total of 25 teams from across the state are competing across three different categories – U-10, U-13, and U-15.

Earlier, the special guest of the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, president of the Kohima District Veteran Football Association (KDVFA) and former advisor, in his speech, remarked on the significant changes in the sports scene compared to the past, emphasising the potential for earning a livelihood through sports.

In this regard, he urged young athletes to give their best efforts consistently, rather than playing sporadically only during tournaments.

Kire also expressed confidence that the young boys will go on to represent the state with distinction.

The inaugural ceremony was chaired by Neidilhoutuo Sechü, vice president (Admin) of KDFA and secretary, organising committee.

The ceremony began with a prayer by Kezhakietuo Belho, associate pastor of  Khedi Baptist Church.

KDFA president and convenor of the organising committee, Mhasimhalie Mathew Yhome, delivered the welcome address.

Meanwhile, the second day of the event will begin with the first semi final match (U-13 category) to be played between Khelo India Centre, Greenwood School and Dimapur Sporting Club Soccer School Academy at 1pm.

This will be followed by the second semi-final match between A Yhome FC and Billy Graham FC.

The final match for the U-10 category will witness Gethemgo Sports Academy in a face-off against Khelo India Centre, Kohima.

In the U-15 category, the first semi-final match was played between Kick FC and Chedema Football Academy. The second semi-final match will be played between Khelo India, Greenwood School and New Market FC.

The semi final matches for both the U-13 and U-15 will be played simultaneously.

President of Angami Sports Association (ASA) Ruokuovikho Chale will be the guest of honour in the closing ceremony to be held on Saturday at 3 pm.
