DIMAPUR — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in its report on insurgency in Northeast has stated that the security situation in North Eastern Region (NER) has improved significantly since 2014.

“Compared to 2014, there has been 76% reduction in insurgency incidents, 90% in security forces casualties and 97% in civilian deaths in 2022,” the report stated.

The report also disclosed that in 2022, in the entire northeast region, six extremists were killed, 563 extremists arrested, seven civilians killed, 2023 extremists surrendered, 394 arms surrendered, 279 arms recovered and 103 persons kidnapped. Two security personnel were also reported killed.

In Nagaland in 2022, one was extremists killed, 167 extremists arrested, two extremists surrendered, 70 arms recovered and 36 persons kidnapped as per the data provided by Ministry of Home Affairs. There was no report of security forces or civilians killed during 2022 in the state.

The MHA report maintained that the terrain, state of socio-economic development and historical factors such as language, ethnicity, tribal rivalry, migration, control over local resources and long and porous international borders were responsible for the fragile security situation in the North Eastern states.

“This has resulted in violence, extortion and diverse demands by various Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs) which maintain safe havens/camps in neighbouring countries,” it added.
