First batch of Amur falcons arrive in Tamenglong

Imphal, Oct. 11 (EMN): The first batch of Amur falcons, the world’s longest travelling raptors, has begun to arrive in Manipur’s Tamenglong district, Manipur’s Forest officials stated.

The first batch of Amur falcons were spotted at Tamenglong on October 9, officials said.

Continuing its annual routine migration, the Amur falcons, which spend their summers at their breeding grounds in southeast Russia and northeast China, began to arrive in the region, reports said.

Amur falcons, locally known as Akhuaipuina in Tamenglong, migrate to their wintering grounds in South Africa and usually arrive in large numbers during October in Nagaland and Manipur besides a few other places in the Northeast, undertaking a yearly journey of about 20,000 km.

They leave the region in November after feeding themselves for their non-stop flight to Africa where they spend their winters.
