Children of destitute home sensitised on animal awareness

Kohima, Sep. 2 (EMN): Office of the chief veterinary officer under Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services conducted an animal welfare awareness campaign at Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home on September 1 on the theme, “Love, care and compassion for animals under animal welfare organisation.”

The team was headed by Dr. Elizabeth Yhome, veterinary surgeon from Veterinary Hospital Kohima, along with four internees from College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie.

A total of 20 children from the destitute home attended the session.

Topics related to the impact and health benefit of pet animals in social lives, differentiation of sick and healthy animals. Importance of consulting veterinarians was also discussed during the programme.

Besides regular de-worming and vaccination schedules, toxicity of chocolate, onion and garlic in pet animals, general feeding guidelines were also enlightened to the participants.

The resource persons also emphasised on the management of pregnant animals and case of young one, disciplining of pet animals, hygienic measures such as bathing and grooming of pet animals. They also spoke on precaution measures such as handling and washing of hands/ feet of animals. Proper fitting of dog’s collar/ leashes to avoid choking and skin irritation etc. was also highlighted during the campaign.

The programme concluded with an interactive session with the children. Dr. Elizabeth Yhome and Khrietseimenuo Chadi, Lejao Y Konyak, Pedenuo Shüya and Wonchibeni K Ezung from College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie, conducted the sessions.
