Diphu, Sep. 6 (EMN): Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM) under Sakhi Express on Tuesday distributed 200 gearless scooters to Sakhi workers of 7 development blocks in a programme held here at Diphu Club on Tuesday.
Distributing the gearless scooters to Sakhi workers, the chief executive member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, said the central and state governments have been supporting the SHGs by introducing various schemes so that they can stand on their own feet.
The government has thought of helping the SHGs with their conveyance problems by providing gearless scooters to them, the CEM said.
Ronghang urged the SHGs to use the gearless scooters for genuine purposes and not for election. “There were some Sakhis who used the gearless scooters provided by the government for campaigning during an election. They were campaigning from one village to another village with gearless scooters against BJP candidates. Politics is a different thing. The government benefits provided to you should not be misused for political purposes,” he said.
The CEM also encouraged the production of traditional costumes by promoting and retaining the original textures to minimise products coming from outside. The handloom & Textiles department will provide materials to the weavers, he said.
Executive Member (EM), KAAC, in-charge DRDA and Legal Metrology, Mukut Mahanta, said the gearless scooters were given to women SHGs to further their activities and enterprises.
“Different SHGs are involved in various activities. Some are engaged in agriculture, while some take up cattle farming, poultry, weaving and support through bank loans. Providing the SHGs with gearless scooters can help them to reach offices and banks for fulfilling their purposes,” the EM said.
The programme was also attended by Horensing Bey, MP, EMs and MACs, deputy commissioner, Dibakar Nath, district project manager, ASRLM, Sadique Ahmed and project director, DRDA, Shashi Kanta Timung.
