Karbi harvest dance staged at Diphu main market

Hacha kekan, a harvest dance of the Karbis was performed at Jambili Athon, Diphu Main Market, on February 23.

It is an annual celebration to promote and preserve the rich culture of the Karbis. The Karbi Locharli Jutang Aterank (KLJA) organised the Hacha kekan.

The Hachakekan started in the evening where cultural troupes of KLJA demonstrated the Hachakekan, along with the song of the origin of paddy sung by Lunsepo playing traditional musical instruments in front of large gathering.

Shopkeepers and commuters assembled on both sides of the road to enjoy the Hachakekan being performed.

Participating in the Hachakekan as chief guest, member of the Autonomous Council (MAC), Johnny Timung, lauded the KLJA for organising Hachakekan and appealed to the educated Karbi youths to come forward in promoting their culture, language and traditions.

“In culture, there should not be any political and religious bearers and everyone should work for promoting the age-old tradition, culture and language,” the MAC said.

President, KLJA, Sinja Tisso said the KLJA has taken the initiative to organise Hachakekan to promote the rich culture and traditions of the Karbis and to encourage the upcoming educated youths to take up the responsibility of preserving and promoting their own culture.
