Poultry Union Dimapur seizes 1,472 kg of live chickens amid ongoing ban

Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) intercepted and seized 1,472.60 kg of live chickens on Monday night that were being transported from Assam to Nagaland.

DIMAPUR — Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) intercepted and seized 1,472.60 kg of live chickens on Monday night that were being transported from Assam to Nagaland. The seizure comes on the sixth day of an ongoing indefinite ban on the entry of poultry (live chickens) into Dimapur.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, Tiameren Aier, president of the PUD, stated that their team intercepted a pickup truck carrying live chickens near the Padumpukhuri gate and that the intended destination for this consignment was reported to be 5th Mile, Chumoükedima.

Based on the recovered receipt, Aier said that the chickens had been purchased at a wholesale rate of INR 150 per kg from Abdul Azad’s chicken wholesale shop located at Lahorijan, Assam. Furthermore, he informed that the confiscated live chickens were returned to the originating location in Assam on the same night.

The PUD president stated that the prohibition would continue until the syndicate system is addressed and demanded that vehicles transporting poultry to Nagaland be permitted to procure chickens directly from the companies and be allowed to enter Nagaland without being entangled in any syndicate-related matters.

The PUD granted permission for the entry of a consignment of poultry on Tuesday, given that the purchase was for the Nagaland Zoological Park. According to the receipt, the Lahorijan wholesaler sold the poultry for INR 145 per kg.

Aier revealed that he is also facing significant challenges; however, he expressed his determination to continue his efforts against the syndicate system and revealed that the ban on importing poultry from Assam is costing him approximately INR 10,000 per day.

He also stated that he currently employs four people at his shop and that, despite the lack of ongoing business activities, he is required to pay their salaries.
