IMPHAL — Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Churachandpur, Dharun Kumar, met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday to brief her on the current situation in the district.

The DC informed the governor about the condition of the around 14,000 displaced people in the relief camps, stating that all essential items such as food, water, and reading materials had been provided to the students.

He mentioned that out of the 500 temporary shelter homes sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs, construction is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed by August this year.

Skill training programmes for 100 youths in the hospitality sector are currently underway, along with plans to conduct handloom and handicraft training programmes for local artisans.

The Governor directed the DC to ensure law and order in the district, emphasising the need to take all necessary steps for the safety and security of the people. She stated that the centre is committed to resolving the impasse, promising tangible steps soon.

Additionally, she instructed the DC to initiate training programmes for the displaced people under various schemes and programmes.

She also presented a cheque of INR 1 lakh to the DC with instructions to deliver it to Sepoy Tongkhongam, a 75-year-old non-pensioner soldier from Churachandpur district. His house was burned down during the violence last year.

The amount was donated by Support Our Heroes (SOH), a Delhi-based NGO that has been providing assistance since 2017 to needy ex-soldiers, their families, as well as veer naris (war widows).

On the same day, eight women leaders of the state also visited the governor at Raj Bhavan and urged for an early resolution to the ongoing conflict between the two communities in the state.

The team informed the governor about the hardships faced by the displaced people in Jiribam district due to the recent spate of violence there and requested that she solve the crisis.

The governor assured the team that all possible efforts are being made and expressed hope that a lasting solution to the crisis would soon be achieved. She stated that the centre is committed to resolving the crisis and emphasised that concerted steps would be taken soon.

Later, representatives of 83 assistant professors selected for Dhanamanjuri University, Imphal, met with the governor to discuss their concerns. They informed her that although they were selected in February of this year, they have not received any offer letters from the university and thus have been unable to join.

They requested the governor’s assistance in this matter. The governor assured the representatives that she would instruct the relevant authorities to take necessary action promptly, prioritising the best interests of the teaching community in the state.
