DIMAPUR — Bombay Natural History Society-Zycus Infotech, in collaboration with St. Xavier College in Jalukie celebrated the first Amur Falcon Festival on November 23.
Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Francis S Cheerangel has sought support of the community and stakeholders in protecting the Amur Falcons. He informed that the college campus is one of the roosting places of thousands of Amur Falcons every year.
An update from the college stated that its students exhibited cultural dance, followed by a song performed by the students of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie.
H Sulanthung Humtsoe, education officer of BNHS, delivered a short note on Amur Falcon conservation efforts by BNHS and its status in Nagaland.
To ensure long-term success, he has recommended sustained support from government agencies, continued partnership and collaboration with local organisations, maintained ownership and engagement from community members.
Kenlumtatei, range in-charge of Forest department, has appreciated the community for their conservation efforts in the past and stressed on the economic importance of bird conservation.
He urged upon every stakeholder and community to protect the birds and follow the same path in conservation of other birds and animals.
A short speech on conservation of Amur Falcon and threats of hunting were delivered by the members of Jalukie Town Council (JTC) and Zeliangrong Youth Organisation (ZYO).
The programme witnessed conservation workshop on conservation of the birds by BNHS-Zycus Infotech as well as conservation workshop on waste disposal by Nagaland Forest Management (DMU-Peren) and FNGO C-CERP followed by painting competition, bird watching activities at Xavierite Botanical Garden.
The event was attended by different students from different schools, colleges, NGOs, Forest department, community leaders, student leaders and bird enthusiasts.
