Another landslide hits Kohima-Dimapur highway
KOHIMA — Fresh landslides near the Old KMC Dumping site in Jotsoma have, once again, blocked the National Highway-29 between Kohima and Dimapur, stranding dozens of trucks just hours after a brief reopening.
The highway, a crucial artery connecting the two cities, was initially blocked by a massive landslide on Monday. The landslide covered a 60-metre stretch of road, extending an estimated 200 metres above the road.
The crew worked to clear a single lane by Wednesday night, subsequently allowing a limited number of vehicles to pass.
However, fresh landslides struck early Thursday morning just metres away from the original site, halting traffic once again. According to sources, at least 46 Kohima-bound trucks and 35 Dimapur-bound trucks managed to pass before the latest landslide.
After relentless restoration works by the NPWD, a single lane has been opened for traffic, according to an update late on Thursday night.
