DIMAPUR — The indefinite ban on the import of poultry (live chickens) into Dimapur entered the fifth day even as the Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) iterated that it would not lift the ban until the “syndicate system” is resolved.
On Monday, it was noticed that almost all the chicken shops in Dimapur were closed except a few stalls selling ‘local chickens.’
Speaking to Eastern Mirror, the PUD president Tiameren Aier claimed that the clarification made by Ranjit Teron, a poultry trader based at Lahorijan in Assam, was “a lie.”
Earlier, the PUD had alleged that Teron was running a poultry trade syndicate from Lahorijan in Assam.
Asserting that Teron is involved in the syndicate system, Aier stated that in Lahorijan, buyers are buying live chickens at a wholesale rate of INR 170 per kg even though Teron claimed that he is disposing of the chickens INR 140 per kg.
It may be mentioned that Teron, during a press conference on Sunday, alleged that a few individuals were responsible for creating the current chaos and disruption of the poultry business.
The PUD had on August 9 lodged a formal complaint to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, stating that the poultry sellers in Nagaland were facing hardship in bringing poultry (live chicken) from Khatkhati, as a gate set up at Khatkhati, authorised by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Taxes department, was intercepting vehicles transporting chickens to Nagaland on the pretext of license checking.
