Chakhesang tribe retains state-level tug-of-war title

KOHIMA — The Chakhesang tribe on Friday lifted the state-level tug-of-war competition for a second time in a row organised by the Tribal Research Institute (TRI) Nagaland under the Department of Tribal Affairs, Government of Nagaland.

The programme was organised as part of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2024 and IEC campaign on Dharti Aabaa Jatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA JGUA). The event, funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, was held at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima.

The Sumi tribe emerged as first runner-up and the Angami tribe secured second runners-up after defeating the Rengma tribe.

In the semi-finals the Chakhesang tribe pulled the Angami tribe and advanced to the final while Sumi tribe pulled the Rengma tribe to enter into the finale.

A total of 16 tribes took part in the competition.

President of Nagaland Tug-of War Association (NTWA), Dr. Vekho Swuro; Commandant of 13 Assam Rifles, Col. Tarun Rana; and secretary of Tribal Affairs, Angelina Tajen, gave away prizes to the winners.

M Kichung, nodal officer, moderated the competition, while Chingsen, junior engineer, administered the oath and Serayi, coach of Nagaland Tug-of-war, was the referee.

Tribal Chef

Tribal chef, a tribal cuisines competition, was also held where the various tribes of Nagaland presented arrays of their indigenous and ethnic cuisines.

Lotha tribe emerged as the winner of the tribal cuisines competition, while the Pochury tribe secured second position and Sumi tribe secured third position.

The cuisine judges were Asano Angami, senior chef of Niathu Group; Chenti Phom, proprietor of DUDA Guest House, Kohima, and Tokupu Kathu, proprietor of Ancestral Cuisine, Kohima.

Dr. Meyisangla Longkumer, joint director of Tribal Affairs, was the moderator.
