DIMAPUR — Wokha Town Councillor Thungchano Kikon, representing Ward-10, spearheaded a special plantation drive on August 20 in Ward-10, which encompasses six colonies.

The plantation drive was carried out on the theme “Cherry 10 and go green,” according to a DIPR report.

It focused on preserving the indigenous cheery plant and other native species while raising awareness about the importance of planting and maintaining a healthy environment. About 1,500 saplings, including wild apples and other indigenous plants, were planted during the drive.

Prior to the distribution and planting of saplings, a formal function was held at the residence of the Chief Medical Officer of Wokha, Dr. Zuben Kikon, in Blue Hill Colony, Wokha town.

Thungchano, on the occasion, emphasised the importance of preserving nature through increased tree planting, noting that trees provide oxygen and improve air quality. She added that planting more trees would contribute to a safer and healthier environment for future generations, thereby securing their quality of life.

Also, the councillor and colony members expressed their gratitude and appreciation to District Forest Ranger Grace Kikon for her assistance in arranging the saplings.
