While many countries have embraced data analytics to enhance the quality of education and measure student outcomes, Indian education sector still lament over the challenges that hinder its progress in harnessing and protecting data. At present, the educational institutions are the prime targets for cyber criminals due to their diversity in size, function, and status, with motivations including financial gain, data theft, disruption, and reputation damage. As per the latest reports the education sector in the country is expected to hold the data of approximately 300 million students, nearly a quarter of India’s total population. Hence it is high time for the sector to turn its attention to this major issue which often gets buried amidst all the talk on pedagogy, quality of teaching, and learning outcomes.

According to the latest researches in India, the data privacy and security have become a more critical concerns, as many of the institutions adopt student developed applications in data collection and data processing. It is necessary for the institutions to ensure the security and privacy of student and faculty information and they must invest time and talents to develop robust data protection policies. The absence of standardized data collection and management systems in most Indian educational institutions creates worry among all the stakeholders.  To keep data safe, organizations should teach their staff about cyber security. Mistakes like sharing data or not updating security tools can also lead to data loss or theft.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 underscores three categories of sensitive personal data, which include biometric, financial, and health information. The legislation places a strong emphasis on the importance of transparent consent mechanisms to protect individuals’ data. The lack of attention to data protection in Indian higher education can be attributed to a combination of awareness, resource, regulatory, and cultural factors. Addressing this issue will require a concerted effort to raise awareness, allocate resources, and develop a culture of data protection within educational institutions.

As educational institutions around the world, have embraced data-driven decision making a way to enhance teaching and learning processes, it is also important for us to imbibe such practices to be globally competent. This approach involves the collection and analysis of data to make informed choices regarding curriculum development, student support, and administrative decision-making.

In an age where digital transformation has become a dominant force in education, data privacy still stands out as a major concern in India’s educational landscape. Enhancing data protection requires a holistic approach that combines policies, technology, training, and a culture of digital privacy. It’s important to stay vigilant and adapt to evolving data protection challenges. While creating a safe digital environment, it is indeed a fundamental duty of the education sector to empower their students with knowledge and awareness of data protection.
