DIPHU — The Forest department and Land & Revenue Department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) carried out a joint eviction drive to clear land encroachers from Klurdung and Langkaijan area at the inter-district border of Karbi Anglong and Hojai on Tuesday.

The Chief Executive Member (CEM) KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang during a press conference said that a total of 247 houses of land encroachers in the Langkaijan area were evicted.

CEM said, ‘there were 1600 families of land encroachers settling in Langkaijan. 1000 families have filed a PIL case in Gauhati High Court. After getting the final verdict from the Hon’ble High Court the KAAC, Law and Order and District Administration in 2019 carried out a joint eviction drive.’

Since the 2019 eviction drive carried out by the Land & Revenue Department, fresh encroachment has been taking place in the area.

Forest sources said that a total of 248 illegal houses constructed in the Langkaijan area and 14 houses in the Klurdung area were dismantled with the help of earthmovers. And due to some doubts about the map on the boundary by both sides (Hojai and Karbi Anglong), about 15 houses were left out during the eviction.

Eviction team consisting of officials of Land & Revenue department and Forest department, secretaries, KAAC including Forest staff and Assam police personnel moved to the eviction area after camping at Sarthe Bey village and Langkaijan.
