Flash floods devastate villages in Wokha district
WOKHA — Flash floods have wreaked havoc in Ronsuyan and Jandalashung B villages and surrounding areas in the Ralan region of Wokha district.
According to Renben Humtsoe, Head GB of Jandalashung B, the flooding began on the evening of July 29 due to torrential rainfall. The Kikhansen River swelled to a height of approximately 5 feet in some areas, leaving hundreds of households stranded, he said.
More than 200 residents, primarily farmers, have been affected, with irrigation systems, agricultural land, fisheries, and ponds submerged by the floodwaters.
Humtsoe said that some families have sought temporary shelter in unaffected homes as waterlogging persists.
This region, he added, experiences flash floods three to four times annually, though it often go unreported.
Landslides disrupt transportation
In a separate incident, a landslide has obstructed the Wokha-Merapani road, disrupting commuters. Additionally, three roadblocks were reported near Sanis ‘0’ point towards Lakhuti village due to landslides on Tuesday morning.
Local residents confirmed that they have reported these incidents to the district administration.
