Heavy rain, storm wreaks havoc in Manipur; houses destroyed, traffic disrupted

IMPHAL — Heavy rain accompanied by strong wind swept through various parts of Manipur on Thursday, damaging houses, uprooting trees and triggering landslides along the National Highway-37 on Thursday, according to reports.

Power supply was affected in several parts of the state, including Tamenglong district headquarters and some colonies in Imphal, but no human casualties were reported.

‘There is no power supply in the hill town since yesterday,” said a resident of Tamenglong over the telephone.

The power line between Rengpang and Tamenglong town was disconnected due to the storm. The farmland and houses located in low-lying areas of Puching village in Tamenglong district, were submerged in water due to the sudden rise in the water level of the nearby streams.

Waterlogging was reported at Mayengbam leikai and Kakwa areas along the Indo-Myanmar Road under Imphal West district due to the continuous downpour and lack of proper drainage system in the area.

It was also reported that two houses were damaged at Waithou Lipok in Thoubal district. A carpentry shed was also destroyed at Kairenbikhok village in the same district, while the traffic between Kairenbikhok and Wangjing villages was disrupted due to uprooting of trees.

A landslide at Awangkhul village along National Highway 37 under Noney district also disturbed the normal traffic for hours, before the debris was cleared in the afternoon.

Heavy rain was reported in Senapati and Ukhrul districts too, but no untoward incidents were reported.
