INTACH revives bamboo mat weaving craft among children

Dimapur, Oct. 15 (EMN): With an objective to create awareness on fading craft traditions and skills, the Nagaland chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in collaboration with Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA), organised a workshop on bamboo mat weaving for school children under the INTACH initiative ‘Learn a craft’ on October 14.

An update from INTACH stated informed that the workshop began with a short programme presided by the INTACH state convener, Sentila T Yanger, followed  with a presentation by Dr. Tolto Metha, NBDA, who spoke on bamboo tagged ‘green gold’ and its diversification, various usages and applications.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mefutiba Longkumer, co-convener of INTACH Nagaland chapter. Later, the students and teachers were given a tour of the bamboo centre by Kevin Solo, staff of NBDA.

It stated that the bamboo workshop was conducted by resource person Amenla, an expert bamboo weaving artisan.

Altogether, 75 students from Christina Memorial Higher Secondary School, Charis High Academy, Delhi Public School, Christian Higher Secondary School, and Bethesda Higher Secondary School participated and individually crafted bamboo mats during the workshop.

Meanwhile, INTACH Nagaland chapter has thanked Tarep Imchen, NBDA team leader, team members and resource person, Amenla, for their support and cooperation in making the workshop a success.
