KOHIMA — Hiroshi Suzuki, the Japanese Ambassador to India, is making a return visit to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, a region with deep connections to World War II.

After his arrival at the state capital on May 7, a cultural programme will be hosted in his at the Chief Minister’s Residential Complex (CMRC) Kohima followed by a dinner at State Banquet Hall.

The ambassador, accompanied by a delegation of four members, will participate in several significant events including the soft launch of the Kohima Peace Memorial and Eco Park near the Red Cross Complex on March 8 morning. He will also pay respects at the Kohima War Cemetery alongside Nagaland’s Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio.

His itinerary also includes visits to the Kohima Cathedral and the World War II Museum at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama.

During his previous visit to the state in December 2023, Ambassador Suzuki acknowledged the historical ties between Japan and Nagaland, dating back to World War II, and expressed gratitude for the Naga people’s kindness towards Japanese individuals who came to collect remains after the war.

A Memorandum of Understanding was established between Nagaland University and ARMS Incorporation to promote Japanese language and culture learning, potentially leading to placements for students in Japanese companies. Additionally, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is actively supporting projects in Nagaland related to environmental, developmental, and health sectors.

Notably, this year holds special significance as it marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Kohima, a pivotal event in World War II. Hence, the ambassador’s visit is expected to further strengthen the cultural and diplomatic ties between Japan and Nagaland.
