MOKOKCHUNG — In an effort to showcase, promote and preserve the vibrant cultural heritage of the Ao community, the Longtrok Senden, a club from Ungma village, successfully held its 39th edition of cultural programme on July 31 evening.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, at the Yimtsüngta Arok Sapang in Ungma village. The event drew huge crowd as age group under14 from ten clubs captivated the audience with their mesmerising dance steps and echoing drum beats.

The deputy commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, who attended the programme as the special guest, lauded Longtrok Senden for their stewardship role in upholding the rich cultural heritage and propagating the rich cultural heritage.

Phoji, while extending Tsungremmung greetings, described Ungma as a grand old village where many Ao villages have emerged and the frontrunner in upholding and preserving the culture, heritage, identity, language and custom. He appealed to rededicate themselves in the efforts to promote Naga culture across the Indian subcontinent.

He cautioned that dilution of culture, language and custom with other sophisticated cultures would lead to extinction of one’s identity. He, therefore, reminded the people to promote and preserve their rich heritage in order to protect identity.

He also pointed out the potential of cultural tourism by inviting other communities, which would help build closer relationships and bonding and attract tourists.

Oliver Temsu Pongen, NEZCC programme officer, spoke on behalf of Dr. Prashana Gogoi, director of NEZCC.

He said the programme was enlightening and impactful for both the participants and audience and encouraged Longtrok Senden to develop a versatile cultural troupe to represent at the international level. He also urged the people of Ungma to concentrate on drama, handicraft, handloom and cultural troupes.

In the competition, United Soyim Club emerged as the winner and Salukum Rogo Ungma was declared runner-up. The Longtrok Senden Excellence Award was also given away to six persons for their contribution in the field of education and culture during the event.
