Manipur to appoint Olympic silver medallist Chanu as Addl. SP

Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh announced that the state government has decided to appoint Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Police department.

Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu from Manipur opened the country’s medal account by winning the first silver medal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting with a total lift of 202 kg on the first day of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

The announcement was made by Biren Singh on the sideline of inspecting the ongoing installation of Cryogenic Oxygen Plant at Porompat and construction of Covid hospital by DRDO at Kyamgei, both in Imphal, according to a press release issued by Chief Minister’s secretariat in Imphal.

Speaking to media persons, Biren Singh said that Mirabai Chanu would also be rewarded with INR 1 crore as announced by the government while the Olympian Judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi would be promoted from the post of Constable to Sub-Inspector.

Maintaining that all the five state sportspersons including boxer MC Mary Kom, who participated in the Tokyo Olympics would be given INR 25 lakh each, he also announced that the state government had decided to establish a World Class Weightlifting Academy in the state soon.

On June 28, the Manipur government had also announced that the state government would hand over a cash award of INR 1.2 crore to gold medal winners, INR 1 crore for silver medal winners and INR 75 lakhs for bronze medal winners at the Tokyo Olympics from Manipur.

Replying to the query regarding extension of curfew, Biren said that the meeting of Technical Committee on Covid-19 is scheduled to be held on Monday. However, the state government is considering extending the ongoing curfew with relaxations on few essential services for the welfare of the public, he added.

Considering the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the state, he informed that the government would set up Community Covid Care Centres in all the constituencies with the support of concerned MLAs, DCs, local clubs etc. Free meals would be provided to the inmates by the government, he added.

The chief minister also informed that 20 KL Cryogenic Oxygen Plant, Porompat, two PSA Oxygen Plants at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences Covid Block, PSA Oxygen Plants at Ukhrul, Senapati and Chandel districts would be inaugurated soon.
