Nagaland CM inaugurates ‘Unity Gate’ along NH 29

DIMAPUR — Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio on Thursday inaugurated the ‘Unity Gate,’ located near the Chathe River Bridge (Patkai Bridge), along the National Highway (NH) 29 in Chümoukedima.

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural programme, Rio stressed the importance of unity in human habitation and said the name ‘Unity Gate’ was chosen with the hope that it would motivate Nagas to unite and foster peace.

He shared that after the first gate was damaged, a decision was made to construct a better gate. Consultations were held with relevant departments and officers, and a decision was made to position the gate across the cliff, in order to avoid any road obstructions.

Highlighting the collaborative effort, Rio noted that the government worked in tandem with local architects, engineers, wood carvers and masons to bring the project to fruition.

He urged the public to take collective responsibility for the gate, emphasising its status as a shared asset. Further, Rio envisioned the site, Patkai Bridge Junction, as a potential tourist destination and proposed plans for its development into a clean space featuring food courts, cafes, toilet facilities, and more. This transformation, he believed, would create a conducive environment for people to spend quality time, promote local products and contribute to the overall appeal of the area.

Presenting the technical report, I Tiameren, Chief Engineer, PWD (National Highways) stated that the architecture of the gate has been designed after the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the people of Nagaland. The dimensions of the gate are 55 feet in length, 12 feet in breadth, and a height of 56.5 feet.

The gate includes two carved gate monoliths, four large wood carvings, and six stone boulders erected as decorative elements.

He informed that the overall project cost amounted to INR 180 lakh. The contracting firm responsible for the project was M/S Chabou and Co., M/S Paragon Prime provided consulting services, while PWD (NH), Kohima Division, was the executing agency of the project.

Earlier, the dedicatory prayer was led by Rev. N Paphino, vice president of Nagaland Joint Christian Forum.
