KOHIMA — The Nagaland Government Higher Secondary School Employees’ Association (NGHSSEA) on Friday organised a facilitation programme for the first time at Dr. NK GHSS Seilhazou, to honour the subject teachers whose students were among the subject toppers, as well as schools that recorded cent percent pass percentage and produced toppers in this year’s HSSLC examination.

Speaking at the event, which also coincided with the annual conference of the association, Kevileno Angami, Commissioner and Secretary of School Education and SCERT, lauded the teachers for the good results in the state board exam.

She acknowledged the dedication, commitment and nurturing spirit of the educators that contributed to the recent achievements.

Highlighting the historical significance of government institutions in producing statesmen, politicians and bureaucrats, she expressed optimism in doing away with the preconceived notions about government schools, while citing the improvement made and the renewed public faith in these institutions.

While calling for rededication, Kevileno said that education is not merely about the transmission of knowledge but also involves instilling values and critical thinking skills in students. “Teachers are seen as catalysts for change, both in the classroom and the broader community,” she added.

She underscored the need to adapt in view of the rapid changes in the school education scenario, particularly in light of the National Education Policy, by introducing multi-skill education and keeping abreast of new developments.

Encouraging teachers to step out of their comfort zones and embrace changes, she also stressed the importance of empathy among educators, acknowledging personal and domestic challenges.

She went on to urge teachers to understand and support each other, suggesting that those who were serving in rural areas for a long period should be willing to switch places with those in urban areas, and vice versa.

Also speaking at the programme, principal of GHSS Chümoukedima, Karen Yepthomi lauded the dedication of educators in Nagaland, while calling for greater support and motivation.

Highlighting some key developments during the academic year 2022-2024, NGHSSEA finance secretary Pipi Gloria Chishi updated that nine government schools were upgraded to higher secondary status, taking the total to 54, out of which 17 offer Science stream besides Arts, while Commerce stream had been introduced in five schools.
