Dimapur, June 9 (EMN): The Nagaland police have arrested a person, one Pankaj Gupta, on charges of cyber crime, on June 9 from Kurukshetra in Haryana.

Updates on Tuesday stated that a team of Haryana police and Nagaland police officers arrested the person.

The arrest was based on a non-bailable warrant of arrest issued by the judicial magistrate first-class, Kohima, updates from the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) stated on Tuesday.

The IPR issued on Tuesday a copy of a press release from the Nagaland police’s public relations officer (PRO).

‘The cyber crime PS of Nagaland police had taken cognizance of various social media trolls uploaded on various platforms by the accused, which were inflammatory, abusive, divisive and prejudicial to the maintenance of social peace and harmony attracting the provisions of IPC, which are cognisable and non-bailable. The accused had made serious allegations without basis and authentication, along with conspiracy theories which are a threat to public peace and order,’ the IPR stated.

According to the updates, the accused is “being processed for transit remand” and shall be produced before the court in Kohima.

The IPR added that the police shall be investigating the involvement of “other co-conspirators” on various social media platforms.

The Nagaland police, through the PRO, have appealed to the citizens of Nagaland to be ‘very cautious and discreet in soliciting comments in social media without verifying facts.’

“The freedom of speech in a democracy also comes with reasonable legal restrictions, and asked the citizens to be mindful of it.”

‘Nagaland police have also stated that any violation of law, shall be strongly dealt with as per the provisions of law and sought the co-operation of one and all to maintain peace and harmony in these difficult times for our state,’ the IPR added.
