Nagaland Police conduct state-wide vehicle checks, seize contraband and illegal substances

DIMAPUR — In a concerted effort to enhance security and enforce traffic regulations, Nagaland Police conducted state-wide vehicle checks over nearly a two-week period in late August and early September.

Utilising personnel from the DEF, NAP and IRB, almost 225 mobile vehicle check points (MVCPs) were established throughout the state on Aug. 24, Aug. 27, and the 30th, and Sep. 2 and the 3rd. All major routes were covered including arterial and axial nodes, and a total of 14,910 vehicles, both private and commercial, were subjected to randomised checks.

According to an update on Thursday, the operation aimed to verify vehicle documentation, detect the carriage of contraband items, including IMFL, narcotics, illegal arms, and other illegal substances.

During the exercise, 258 vehicles were compounded under various sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. Eight vehicles lacking valid documentation were seized, and fines amounting to INR 40,500 were collected for various violations, it said.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal alcohol and narcotics. A total of 568 bottles of IMFL/Rum and 489 cans of beer were seized, leading to the registration of criminal cases under the NLTP Act. Additionally, law enforcement officials seized one bottle of codeine, 258 contraband capsules, and 20 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar. Corresponding cases have been registered under the NDPS Act, it said.

Furthermore, the MVCPs apprehended 19 individuals found in violation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regulations.

Meanwhile, acknowledging that inconveniences may have been caused due to the MVCPs, the police stated that it would try to minimise or avoid multiple checking of a vehicle on a single trip.
