Dimapur: Neihunuo Sorhie from Nagaland was presented Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.
“A tribal weaver from Nagaland, she (Sorhie) has trained hundreds of Naga women and has been preserving traditional Naga designs and crafts,” posted Murmu on her Twitter handle.
Sorhie and Moa Subong, also from Nagaland, were among the Padma Shri recipients for the year 2023 for their contribution in the field of Arts.
Out of 106 Padma awardees announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day, only 54, including three Padma Vibhushan, four Padma Bhushan and 47 Padma Shri awards were presented at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I on Wednesday.
The rest of the awardees, including Subong, will be presented the award during the next investiture ceremony.
Sorhie is a two-time recipient of National Handloom Award in 2007 and 2022 for her art work (handicraft) and represented India in Paris, France, where she showcased her works at Le BHV Marais.
