Dimapur, Aug. 14 (EMN): Commemorating the 74th Naga Independence Day, officials of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) hoisted the Naga national flag at its Oking office in Kohima, on August 14.

On the occasion, NSF conveyed warm greetings to all the Naga people living in different parts of the world.

The day was observed to carry forward the aspirations of the Naga pioneers to be free from any occupational and imperialistic forces. The day was also observed to further the demand of the Naga people’s legitimate rights based on historical facts, an update from NSF media cell stated.

On the occasion, the NSF reiterated its earlier appeal to the Naga people to love one another unconditionally, accept each other’s weaknesses, respect each other’s differences and, together with Christ, strive towards its ultimate goal.

It was also reported that the federating units and sub-ordinate bodies under the NSF and ANCSU across all Naga-inhabited areas hoisted the Naga national flag on the occasion.

Rengma Students’ Union

In a related programme, Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) celebrated the 74th Naga Independence Day at a historic Parashen site, a place where the Naga national flag of the then newly formed Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) was first hoisted on March 22, 1956.

Sharing a solidarity message on the occasion, president of Rengma Youth Organisation Kenneth Kath stated that Rengma people have always remained steadfast in the political history of the Nagas and would continue to press forward until the aspiration of the Naga people is realised.

He called upon the international community to acknowledge and honour “our unique identity, our rights, our rich tradition and cultural practices and of our very existence as a free people,” an update from the student organisation stated. Kath further urged for unity among the various stakeholders and the Naga people in general.

Also speaking on the occasion, NSF education secretary Kegwayhun Tep stated that the younger generation would remain indebted to those Naga men and women for the sacrifices made by giving their lives for the identity and sovereignty of the Naga people. He added that the occasion called for “each one of us to reflect back on all the past leaders and martyrs on whose sacrifices we now stand today”.

He went on to express solidarity with the present day nationalists who have dedicated their lives in pursuit towards the aspirations of the Naga people.

The programme was attended by officials from NSF, RSU, RSZ and students and well-wishers from the Rengma community.
