One day training on buffalo farming held
DIPHU — The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department in collaboration with Karbi Farmer’s Association (KFA) of Tingku Engti faction organised a one training programme on scientific buffalo farming for the villagers of Desoi Rongpi, Doldoli at the residence of village headman Lindok Rongpi’s residence today.
The Deputy Director of Buffalo Breeding Project, Manja who is also incharge of District Veterinary Officer (DVO), Dr. Dilip Mahanta said that Karbi Anglong has vast land suitable for buffalo farming. He said buffalo farming is a profitable source of income.
The DVO said that the department is planning to start a buffalo farming project at Desoi Rongpi village soon.
The DVO said that pig farmers suffered economic loss as African swine fever affected pig farming severely in Karbi Anglong during the last few years. many pigs died and the owners faced an economic loss. But in recent years the populations of pigs have increased as many have started to pig farming.
Mahanta urged the villagers to adopt scientific ways of rearing goats, pigs and buffaloes in order to get more profit.
Veterinary Officer (VO), State Veterinary Dispensary, Dhansiri, Dr. Sabnam Engtipi while interacting with the villagers said that there should be a selection of good variety pigs for rearing. She said, for faster growth and healthy pigs, de-worming should be done from time to time and fed with good feed.
She said pigs should be reared in pig sty and should be cemented in order to maintain hygiene.
Dr. Engtipi said that, Azolla, an aquatic fern, is a perfect livestock feed rich in protein and pig farmers can cultivate them in ponds. The plants can be obtained from the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department.
