DIMAPUR — A two-day masterclass on news sense, editing, and data journalism, organised by the department of Mass Communication at Patkai Christian College (PCC) (Autonomous), with Associate Editor of The Morung Express Dr. Moalemba Jamir as the trainer, concluded on Saturday at the college premises.

During the masterclass, the trainer explored the significance of developing news sense and discussed at length the essential elements and factors of news editing, according to a press release.

Dr. Jamir spoke about the fundamental rule for developing and writing news stories as journalists. Reiterating the importance of developing news sense, he advised the students not to accept his statements as absolute truth. Instead, he emphasised that their job is to fact-check with those they interact with.

He further stressed recognising emerging trends and perspectives within a routine event to develop a story. He also tasked the students with creating headlines for sample news stories and offered advice on how to craft compelling headlines.

Another session focused on photojournalism, where students were encouraged to analyse images and ensure every picture taken tells a story. Dr. Jamir also conducted a role-play exercise designed to simulate a press conference, with a student acting as a tourism director and the class tasked with formulating questions as media persons.

A total of 30 participants attended the two-day masterclass.
