Dimapur, Feb. 20 (EMN): With the objective to impart peace education and emphasise the importance of peace in the minds of young people, Peace Channel organised a one-day capacity building programme for teacher animators and students of St. Joseph’s School in Niuland on February 19.
An update from Peace Channel stated that resource person, Kaka Teresa, spoke on the concept of peace, which is one of the most essential requirements of humanity and a necessary prerequisite for progress, development and sustainability. She also motivated the students on the concept of peace towards transforming the culture of violence into culture of peace.
She stated that peace is not just merely the absence of war but a situation where individuals or groups actively collaborate and co-exist in harmony and understanding despite odds. Pointing out that bringing peace in the society is a complex process, she stated that it involves prevalence of justice, mutual understanding of culture and the religion of others, humanity, tolerance and acceptance of differences.
“Peace can be installed in the young minds by educating the culture of working together, appreciating co-existence, developing non-violent conflict resolution skills, respect for human dignity, religious tolerance and understanding of the world,” Teresa said.
She, therefore, encouraged the students to be a ‘change maker and an agent of peace for our better tomorrow.’ She also challenged the participants to set “smart goals” which are specific, measurable, achievable, and rational-realistic and time bound. She further encouraged the participants to take initiative in bringing peace wherever they are.
Altogether, 80 students and three teacher animators participated in the programme.
In a separate programme, Peace Channel organised a peace building process programme for women of Zeliang Catholic community in Burma Camp, Dimapur.
In the programme, Caroline Leisan spoke on the role of women in “promoting peace and building peace” and urged the members to follow the principles of peace, love, humility, honesty, courage, discipline and empathy to end conflict.
While highlighting the vital role of women in peace building, she stated that women have the potential to bring about transformation in the Naga society. Cautioning that negative mindset would only bring divisions and inequalities, she advised the women to learn and imbibe good qualities in order to bring prosperity and create a peaceful environment in the society.
Altogether, 28 participants took part in the programme.
