Plantation drive marks 180 years of YMCA movement
DIMAPUR — Commemorating 180 glorious years of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) movement, the Nagaland chapter of YMCA organised a tree plantation drive in Thahekhu village, Dimapur, on June 7.
An update from the association stated that during the event, YMCA members led by its president, Dr. Andrew Ahoto Sema, planted tree saplings in and around Thahekhu village.
It mentioned that the Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844, by Sir George Williams who was an English philanthropist and businessman. The organisation is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and has more than 64 million members across 120 countries.
It added that since its inception, YMCA has grown rapidly, ultimately becoming a worldwide movement.
It further stated that local YMCAs deliver projects and services focused on youth development through a wide variety of youth activities including providing athletic facilities, holding classes for a wide variety of skills, promoting Christianity and humanitarian work.
