Probe launched after formaldehyde leak in Chümoukedima

DIMAPUR — A formaldehyde leak near St. Joseph Higher Secondary School in Chümoukedima on Monday triggered an emergency response and prompted an investigation into potential safety violations. The incident, which occurred around midday, exposed local residents and schoolchildren to the chemical, which is known to cause a range of health issues.

Exposure to formaldehyde, even at low levels, can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Higher concentrations can lead to more serious problems, including breathing difficulties, nausea, and skin reactions. Prolonged or repeated exposure has been linked to certain types of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Fire crews from the Chümoukedima Fire Station were dispatched to the scene following reports of a strong chemical odour. Sub-Inspector Aningba Yimchunger stated that fire-fighters spent over two hours using water to dilute the formaldehyde and disperse fumes.

The operation extended along the road from St. Joseph Higher Secondary School to Little Flower School, reaching as far as the Green Timber Plywood Factory where the formaldehyde was reportedly being transported.

A police official stated that an investigation had been launched into the incident as proper regulations and norms for transporting the chemical were not followed. The formaldehyde was being transported in plastic drums on a pickup truck which is completely against regulations, he said.

This improper transportation is believed to have caused the leak, exposing schoolchildren, residents, and even responding officers to the hazardous chemical. The officer himself reported experiencing breathing difficulties and eye irritation due to the fumes.

Further, the Chümoukedima administration has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Chümoukedima police station. Authorities have stated that individuals involved in the incident will be summoned for questioning, and appropriate legal action will be taken.
