DIMAPUR — Kripa Foundation Nagaland with support from the department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland, observed ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ at the Red Cross Complex in Kohima on June 24 with the joint director of NSACS, Dr. Bernice D Thapru, as the guest speaker.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bernice stated that, as representatives of NGO or as public, everyone should educate people on the primary prevention from drugs.

“We can simply do it within our circle by telling friends, family, neighbours and loved ones that using drugs is not a fashion. While those who are already into drugs can seek help, the facilities are all there, the rehabs, treatments, professional counselors,” she said.

She also mentioned about reaching out to schools to educate the ill effects of drug use as they are at the most vulnerable age.

Describing drug abuse as a disease which cannot be addressed by force, she encouraged dealing drug abuse holistically with a human touch and with care. She further urged everyone to continue the work with the same commitment and zeal to ensure the society free from drugs.

Meanwhile, Renbonthung discussed about developing PP strategy with the existing facilities. He encouraged organising awareness programmes in schools, youth programmes and developing leadership skills.

He also mentioned about the coming of second wave of drug abuse in the state in the form of sunflower drug as it has become very common among young adolescents and school going students. He strongly encouraged all to invest and focus on prevention and to think beyond ‘what we usually do and innovate programmes for a better society.’

In his concluding remarks, Abou Mere stated that by investing on prevention ‘we can save people from HIV, overdose, legal harm, mental health problem etc.’

He further thanked everyone for their participation.
