Benjongsola Jamir began her musical journey at the age of six, guided by her mother, who recognised her talent and encouraged her to use her gift to honour God in all aspects of her life.

Jamir, a first-semester BA student at Dimapur Government College, is passionate about music and dedicated to her development as a gospel singer.

In an exclusive interview with Eastern Mirror, Jamir shares insights into her musical journey and future plans.

Eastern Mirror: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped you?

Jamir: Some of my biggest musical influences include Dolly Parton. Since the age of six, I have always enjoyed her music and loved the way she writes songs, making them versatile and pure.

As I grew older, my love for gospel singing and music deepened, and I was influenced by artistes such as Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, Lauren Daigle, and many more.

These artistes have helped me become more open to discovering the beauty of music, inspired me to write songs that speak life to others, and assisted me in understanding the language of music.

Eastern Mirror: Do you find it challenging to keep up with academic responsibilities while also dedicating time to music?

Jamir: Yes, definitely. Sometimes it is challenging to juggle both academics and music at the same time; balancing both can be tough, but I find ways to make it work. It has taught me discipline and resilience, which play a big role in my life now.

Eastern Mirror: How do your teachers and classmates react to your musical career?

Jamir: I am simply blessed because my teachers and classmates from my former schools, as well as now, have always been so supportive and encouraging in my music career. They have been a source of motivation at times when I felt like not wanting to stand on stage. Their love and support have always been with me, and I am thankful for it.

Eastern Mirror: How has being an artiste positively impacted your life, both personally and professionally?

Jamir: I have been singing since I was very young. Singing has given me many opportunities to grow in every aspect. It has provided me with the confidence to face crowds and meet many new people who have been influential in my life. Music has also brought me closer to God. It brings immense joy to my life to sing His praises, and every day I thank my personal Lord and Saviour for giving me the talent to sing.

Eastern Mirror: Do you think there are enough platforms and support system for emerging artistes in Nagaland?

Jamir: Sadly, no. If we talk about platforms in Nagaland, I don’t see many. Looking back at my music career, I remember participating in some state talent shows for singing, but apart from that, my performances have mostly been on small stages, such as weddings, various functions, and churches.

I am aware that the government of Nagaland has initiated efforts to boost the music industry in our state, and there have been improvements, but it has not yet matured.

Having said that, I do believe that social media platforms are available to everyone, and if we use them judiciously—though it is not an easy task—we can create our own platforms, reach out to many audiences, and share our music with the world.

Eastern Mirror: Do you prefer composing and performing songs in your local dialect or in English, and why?

Jamir: Music is an emotion and a language in itself, so I love composing and performing songs both in my local dialect and in English. My ultimate goal is to create music that will inspire, transform, and win souls for the Lord.

Eastern Mirror:  In your opinion, what is the greatest privilege of being an artiste in Nagaland?

Jamir: Specifically in Nagaland? Oh, it’s definitely sharing the love of music with my fellow Nagas who love music as much as I do.

Eastern Mirror: Who typically composes the songs you perform? Do you collaborate with songwriters or write them yourself?

Jamir: I do a mix of both. Some songs I write myself, while others are collaborative efforts with other talented songwriters. However, most of the original songs I have performed to date were written by incredibly talented songwriters. I am grateful to work with such creative individuals who understand my style and help bring these songs to life.

Eastern Mirror: Are there any upcoming projects?

Jamir: Yes, definitely! There are some new projects on the horizon, and I am looking forward to the love and response, as they are going to be something original.
