Vihosa Zhotso, better known by his stage name “Veezy Beatz”, has several feathers in his cap- as a producer, composer, singer and rapper.

The artiste, who has no formal training in music, said that the transformative power of music, its capacity to arouse feelings, tell tales and unite people from diverse backgrounds, is what inspires him.

In today’s Rhythm of Love, he takes us through his musical journey, his future plans, and more.

Eastern Mirror: How did you get into music, and how long have you been working as a producer and singer?

Veezy Beatz: I developed a passion for music at a young age, exploring various genres, with hip-hop particularly sparking my interest. It was not until four years ago, in 2020, that I began to pursue music seriously and ventured into music production. Initially, I focused on creating beats and instrumentals for various artists, as well as mixing and mastering their tracks. In 2021, I started recording and releasing my own songs, a pursuit I have continued to this day.

Eastern Mirror: What inspires you and what makes you want to keep producing music?

Veezy Beatz: I am inspired by the transformative power of music and its ability to evoke emotions, tell stories, and connect people across different backgrounds. The ever-evolving nature of the music industry and the opportunity to innovate and express myself creatively drive my passion. The positive feedback and connection I experience with my audience motivate me to continue producing music and pushing the boundaries of my craft.

Eastern Mirror: Do you draw inspiration from any artistes? Also, what genre do you prefer?

Veezy Beatz: Yes, I draw inspiration from several artists across various genres. In particular, I am drawn to hip-hop, pop and pop-punk which have significantly influenced my musical style and production techniques. Artists such as Polo G, The Kid Laroi, Juice Wrld, Lil Tjay, and MGK have been influential in shaping my approach to music.

Eastern Mirror: Do you have any formal education in music?

Veezy Beatz: I have no formal education in music; however, I have always possessed a keen ear for it. I acquired my knowledge of music production through self-directed learning, primarily by watching tutorials on YouTube.

Eastern Mirror: What is the story behind your stage name?

Veezy Beatz: There’s nothing that deep of a meaning behind it. It actually comes from the initials of my name, Vihosa Zhotso, V from my first name and Z from my last name. So from there, I made it out to be VeeZy

Eastern Mirror: If you could choose between producing music and being an artiste, what would you choose and why?

Veezy Beatz: As an independent musician and artiste, I handle all aspects of my music, from singing and track creation to mixing and mastering. Therefore, I cannot prioritise one aspect over another, as they are all integral to my process. This versatility allows me to be what many refer to as an ‘all-rounder’.

Eastern Mirror: Can you share us some of your works you are proud of to this day?

Veezy Beatz: I take pride in all the songs I have produced, both for myself and for other artists. However, I am particularly proud of my song “Oasis,” a collaboration with Anonymous Jamir. This track is especially significant to me, as it was the first song for which I created a music video. I consider “Oasis” a milestone in my artistic journey. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Anonymous Jamir and Firefly Records for their contributions to making this project possible.

Eastern Mirror: What is one thing that you look for in an artiste when you collaborate with them?

Veezy Beatz: When collaborating with an artiste, I look for a style of music that complements my cadence, flow, and overall style.

Eastern Mirror: What do you enjoy most while making music? What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

Veezy Beatz: What I enjoy most about making music is the ability to express my thoughts and emotions, whether through my songs or the beats I produce—each piece tells a story. However, balancing my time between music and maintaining a social life presents a challenge. Additionally, pursuing a career in music is a significant step, especially given the traditional expectations of Naga parents, who often prioritise success in civil examinations.

Eastern Mirror: What are some of the things you are currently working on? What can we expect in 2024?

Veezy Beatz: Currently, I am focusing on refining my production skills and expanding my musical repertoire by experimenting with new genres and sounds. I am also working on several collaborations with other artistes. Additionally, I am planning to engage more with my audience through social media and live events to build a stronger connection.
