DIMAPUR — While upholding its commitment to uplift the Rengma community and the Naga people in general, the Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) has endorsed the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) notifications dated May 11 and 14 regarding indigenous identity, culture and good governance in the upcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in Nagaland.
Recognising the critical need to protect and safeguard the interests and essence of the Naga people, the union fully supported the federation’s assertion for absolute indigenous representation in the upcoming ULB elections, specifically advocating ‘Nagas by blood, not by adoption.’ The RSU also supported the NSF’s stance on excluding women married to non-locals and their offspring from contesting in the elections.
The RSU believed that preserving Naga identity in decision-making processes at the local level is paramount in upholding the principles of inclusivity, equality and indigenous rights. The union felt it essential in pursuit of a democratic and empowered Nagaland.
In this regard, RSU has urged all stakeholders and concerned citizens to advocate for the sanctity of indigenous participation in the elections. Additionally, it appealed to the voters to exercise their precious vote wisely, not under the influence of money but for visionary candidates dedicated to public service, thereby ensuring a brighter and sustainable future for Nagaland.
