Dimapur, June 21 (EMN): Nvidia‘s deep learning super sampling (DLSS) is going to get developer support in over 55 games including Facepunch Studios‘ survival hit, Rust.

The American multinational technology company has announced today that DLSS support will be added to the massively popular survival game, Rust, on July 1. Two other games, Necromunda: Hired Gun and Chernobylite, will receive DLSS support today.

What is DLSS?

DLSS is Nvidia‘s AI rendering technology that uses deep learning to upscale a game’s graphics from a lower-resolution to a higher-resolution one. It can effectively boost frame rates and provide an opportunity for people to experience 60FPS 4K gaming who’d otherwise have to settle for 1080p or 1440p gaming.

The basic idea is to put less strain on your GPU by letting it render an image at a lower resolution and then using AI to upscale that lower resolution renders into a higher resolution output.

Bear in mind that DLSS only works with GeForce RTX 20 and GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs.

How does DLSS work?

DLSS basically forces a game to render at a lower resolution and uses a trained AI algorithm to predict how the low render image would look if it was rendered at a higher resolution.

According to Nvidia, “By training against a large dataset of 16K-resolution images, the DLSS algorithm learns to predict high-resolution frames with greater accuracy. And through continual training on NVIDIA’s supercomputers, DLSS can learn how to deal with new classes of content — from fire to smoke to particle effects — at a rate that engineers hand-coding non-AI algorithms simply could not keep up with.”

The result of the upcaling is better performance and frame rates without substantial loss in visual fidelity.

We have already seen DLSS being released for titles like Rainbow Six SiegeNo Man’s Sky and The Persistence. On top of that DLSS is now available as a free plugin for Unreal Engine 5.

As more titles get DLSS support, it would be interesting to see whether AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is going to get the same momentum. At the moment Nvidia‘s DLSS 2.0 seems to do a better job at upscaling images, however, with AMD announcing support for FSR even in non-RTX Nvidia cards, the jury is still out on the matter.
