DIMAPUR — As part of the nationwide ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024’ initiative, the Salesian College of Higher Education (SCHE), Dimapur, undertook an anti-plastic pollution drive on Saturday.

An update from the college stated that the campaign involved active participation of students, faculty and staff to combat plastic waste in key areas around the college campus. It stated that the college’s well-coordinated effort saw different student clubs taking responsibility for specific areas.

Accordingly, the Eco and Bosco Clubs led a thorough cleanup of the Tin-ali area in Thahekhu, while the Red Ribbon Club (RRC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) focused their attention on the railway track till Thahekhu gate and the Literary, Yuva, and Media Clubs worked together to clear the Good Shepherd Seminary area of plastic waste.

It stated that participants engaged in plogging, a practice that combines jogging with collecting litter, highlighting the initiative’s emphasis on physical well-being alongside environmental action.

The report stated that the campaign not only addressed the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also fostered a sense of shared responsibility among participants.

One student said, “It’s about more than just cleaning up; it’s about being proactive in creating the world we want to live in.”

Meanwhile, the college principal, Fr. Dr. Paul Punii, has lauded the initiative stating, “This campaign serves a dual purpose. It helps clean our environment while instilling in our students the values of responsibility, teamwork, and discipline—qualities essential for a sustainable future.”

It mentioned that ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024’ campaign, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission, aims to promote environmental cleanliness and public involvement across the nation. Under this year’s theme, “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskar Swachhata,” the initiative encourages voluntary community action to address environmental issues, especially the growing menace of plastic pollution.

It further stated that Salesian College’s involvement aligned perfectly with those goals, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to both education and environmental responsibility.

By integrating environmental awareness into the curriculum and extracurricular activities, it stated that the college would continue to inspire its students to become agents of change by actively participating in efforts that make a tangible difference in their communities.
