DIMAPUR — With an aim to promote clean election, the Electoral Literacy Club, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, of St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, organise an electoral literacy campaign on March 22.
The initiative was led by Kumar Ramnikant, deputy commissioner of Kohima, and supported by the Election Commission of India (ECI), stated an update from the college.
The campaign saw active participation from over 1000 students across seven classes from the departments of Political Science and Sociology, who pledged their commitment to clean elections by signing cards provided by the ECI and also received informative pamphlets highlighting the significance of clean electoral practices
It stated that the club general secretary, Kepozo Kapuh, elucidated the essence of clean elections by emphasising the importance of urban local bodies (ULB) and Lok Sabha elections. He also highlighted key qualities to discern in candidates during electoral processes
The primary objective of the campaign was to galvanise interest and active participation, particularly among youth in the upcoming elections. The club aims to instill a sense of responsibility for upholding democratic values and principles, ensuring that electoral proceedings transpire in a transparent and fair manner.
The club also endeavours to cultivate cadre of conscientious and authentic voters through the ripple effect of its impactful campaign.
As the Lok Sabha elections drew nearer, it stated that the significance of electoral literacy cannot be overstated. The campaign underscored the importance of student engagement in understanding the essence of democracy through elections and acquiring knowledge to become informed voters.
Holds panel discussion
In another programme, the Global Shapers Kohima Hub, in collaboration with Kohima district administration, organised an interactive panel discussion for students on future opportunities at the college on March 22.
In the welcome address, Imlikokla Jamir, curator of Global Shaper Kohima, shared the purpose and objectives of the programme, while the extra assistant commissioner (EAC) and nodal officer of Mission Shakti, Moasunep K Jingru, highlighted the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme initiated in 2015 to address gender discrimination and empower girl children.
The women panelists were Dr. Avinuo Kire, Dr. Levino Yhoshü, Sophy Lasuh and Ketholeno Kense Vihienuo.
The discussion witnessed an interactive question and answer session with the students where the panelists addressed the queries and concerns of the students.
