DIMAPUR — Renowned social entrepreneur and founder of Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS), Rev. Dr. Chingmak Chang, delivered a motivational talk on the theme ‘Against all odds’ at St Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima, on May 5.

Rev. Chingmak in his talk said the key qualities a social entrepreneur must have to become successful are purpose in life, quality leadership, optimism against all odds, consistency in one’s passion and, to be brave and honest.

He said that as a young MBA student, one must have a purpose and it is only after understanding the purpose that a student can have a meaningful life in the university.

“So also is with a social entrepreneur and his business. When you have found the purpose, even if there are many difficulties, ups and downs in life, you can be like a bullet train bulldozing through problems, poverty and all kinds of challenges,” he said.

Chingmak also pointed out that the reason why the government makes lot of mistakes is because it presumes what the people need and give accordingly.

“The government never goes to the villagers and asks what your problem is?” Chingmak said.

On the other hand, a social entrepreneur is one who is able to go down to the grassroots, feel what they need, sit with them and understand their problem.

A social entrepreneur is a businessman and a businessman is able to become successful because he is able to understand gaps and able to build a market because he knows the people and their needs, he said.

“Villagers are the most intelligent people, customers are the most intelligent people. Try not to fool villagers. If you go to villages and tell you want to do something for them, they are looking for attitude, they are looking for character,” Chingmak added.

The talk was organised by the Department of Management along with Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) with the purpose to provide valuable insights and inspiration to the students about the challenges – social, political and economics – entrepreneurs face at the time of starting a venture.
