Dimapur, Dec. 4 (EMN): The people of Kohima and visitors will now have a space to breathe fresh air and hangout, as the Sokhriezie Park which is located in the heart of Kohima, has been opened to the public.

The park was inaugurated by Minister of Rural Development, Metsubo Jamir on December 4, according to an update from DIPR.

Jamir expressed happiness at the completion of the park and thanked the members of T Khel for facilitating various developmental activities. Citing various hurdles faced in carrying out developmental works in Kohima, he suggested proper planning.

He said that mental development and infrastructure development should go side by side, and that ‘all developmental activities must strive for sustainability so as to secure the future of the future generations’.

Chairman of T Khel, Thepfuvilie Suohu mentioned that the park was a long-cherished dream to preserve, beautify and contribute to the people of Nagaland, and that it was possible because of the intervention of Rural Development department. He, on behalf of the elders, blessed and wished the facility a fruitful beginning.

The special guest also inaugurated waste disposal vehicle and Sokhriezie Market.

Sokhriezie, which is derived from the words ‘Sokhrie’ meaning ‘beloved guests’ and ‘zie’ meaning ‘lake’, was known for its salty water (called keziedzii or iodine salt by local people) in the days of yore. This ‘special salt water’ was used to prepare food for special guests and friends of the community, according to the update received here.

“It is also said that the khel community used to observe ‘genna’ every year by bringing an unblemished and healthy cock to this lake (Sokhriezie), invoking blessings for good fortune and health upon the Tsutuonuomia clan,” the update read.

“As a matter of fact, Sokhriezie was and is still a very important place for Tsutuonuomia Khel in varied ways. History proves that ancestors attached great importance to this place and had protected this historical lake with great care,” it added.
