SPUNER hosts 78th I-Day badminton tournament in Delhi

DIMAPUR — The Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER) organised the 78th Independence Day badminton tournament at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi on August 8 and the 9th.

In a press release, the SPUNER informed that the tournament was organised in alignment with the strategic directives outlined in the standing order and the 100-day action plan mandated by the Commissioner of Delhi Police,

The event brought together 80 participants from the North Eastern states, Gorkhas of Darjeeling, and Ladakhis, fostering a sense of unity and oneness among these diverse communities residing in Delhi and NCR.

“The tournament was more than just a sports event; it served as a platform to connect individuals from these regions who are often scattered across different parts of the capital city.

“By bringing them together under one roof, SPUNER aimed to strengthen the ties between these communities, promote a feeling of oneness, and facilitate the sharing of experiences and building of lasting relationships,” the release stated.

The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation, with Kadunguang Kamai and Thongam Thoithoiba Meitei emerging as the champions, while R Lalduhawma and Vanlalawmpuia were places runners-up.

Ajay Chaudhry, Special Commissioner of Police, was the chief guest of the closing ceremony. He was accompanied by PN Khrimey, Joint Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC/SPUNER, and Joram Maivio, member of the monitoring committee, Ministry of Home Affairs.

In his address, Chaudhry emphasised the significance of such events in fostering unity and togetherness among the various communities in Delhi. He highlighted SPUNER’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of these communities and reaffirmed the Delhi Police’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Khrimey also reiterated the importance of cultural and social integration. He stressed that events like these not only provide a platform for sporting excellence but also play a crucial role in bridging cultural gaps and building mutual respect and understanding among different communities.

Representing the players, Rocky Angumei, pastor of Church of Hope, and Aphang, assistant professor at Maitreyi College, expressed gratitude to SPUNER for organising the event.

The tournament concluded with the awarding of trophies and certificates to the winners and participants.

“The 78th Independence Day Badminton Tournament is one of many initiatives undertaken by SPUNER as part of its broader mission to support and uplift the communities it serves. The event demonstrated the power of sports in building bridges and creating a strong, united community, reflecting the spirit of unity in diversity that defines our nation,” the release added.
