DIMAPUR — The State Election Commission of Nagaland has officially released the list of political parties and their corresponding symbols for the upcoming municipal and town council elections scheduled on June 26.

This decision, made in compliance with the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023 and the Election Symbol (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, outlines the symbols that will be used by recognised national and state parties, registered but unrecognised parties, and independent candidates.

The list includes symbols for major national parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party (Broom), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (Hammer, Sickle and Star), Bharatiya Janata Party (Lotus), and Indian National Congress (Hand), and Bahujan Samaj Party (Elephant).

The state parties of Nagaland and the symbols reserved for them include the Naga Peoples Front (Cock), Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (Globe), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (Helicopter), and Nationalist Congress Party (Clock).

The reserved symbol for the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) is a ‘man blowing Turha’, pending final order of the Supreme Court of India, an update stated.

State parties recognised in one state but granted concession to use their reserved symbol in another state included the Nagaland Congress (Dao), Rising People’s Party (Pen Nib with Seven Rays), and United Naga Democratic Party (Hat).

However, for this category, the nomination of candidates set up by that party in such other state will also be required to be subscribed by one elector of the Ward, as proposer, it said.

It also provided a list of thirty ‘free symbols’  such as almirah, flute, auto-rickshaw, gas stove, bat, letter box, battery torch, plastering trowel, belt, ring, binoculars, safety pin, box, scissors, calculator, sewing machine, camera, spanner, computer, table, cutting pliers, trumpet, diamond, violin, dish antenna, water tank, ear rings, whistle, envelope, and wool and needle.
