Students debate ‘one nation, one election’ at Youth Voters’ Festival in Kohima

DIMAPUR — Shanavas C, DC and DEO, Kohima, questioned on Tuesday whether people are practising the correct meanings of democracy and elections, while discussing free and fair voting in the context of today’s elections.

He was speaking at the Youth Voters’ Festival, which was held at DC conference hall and included a debate of the ‘youth parliament session’ on the theme ‘One nation, one election: a boon or a bane for Indian democracy,’ as part of SVEEP activities, according to a DIPR report.

Shanavas said it was heartening to see students come forward to discuss and debate a contentious topic that is critical to raising awareness about one’s rights in a democratic country. He did, however, remind the students that the debate was not about winning or losing but about participating.

Students from Model Christian College, Japfü Christian College, Kros College, Nagaland University (Meriema), and St. Joseph College took part in the debate.

Leah A Yeptho (St. Joseph College) won the debate, while Kepozo Kapuh (St. Joseph College) came in second. Keneisetsonuo Chatsu (St. Joseph College) and Keviseto Zutso (Japfü  Christian College) were placed third.

In total, 14 students took part in the debate.

Shanavas gave away certificates and cash awards to the winners, as well as certificates to all the other participants.

The judges for the youth parliament session were Sharon Longchari, Jt. Chief Electoral Officer; Dr. Riku Khutso, EAC Kohima; and Pichano Kikon, SDO Kohima.
