DIMAPUR —  The Joint Action Committee (JAC) for NH-129A Peren Town said that it has suspended the blockade on the national highway “till such time it may so warrant”, as the government is pursuing the issue seriously.

Mireulung Sephe, co-convener and spokesperson of JAC, however, said that they would resume the bandh “anytime” if the matter is not solved.

Reiterating that the suspension was “temporary”, he refuted the claim made by a source that the ‘JAC would not re-impose blockade on NH-129A’, which was published in a couple of local dailies including this newspaper on Friday. He added that the committee had not made any statement on the matter.

It may be mentioned that the JAC, comprising civil society organisations and Peren Village Council, had imposed an indefinite bandh along the Peren-Maram 2-lane road from July 31, over the failure to address the NH-129A package 1 (Peren Town portion) issue despite numerous appeals and memorandums.

It had accused the NHIDCL of not constructing the national highway as per the original detailed project report (DPR) and contract agreement for the Peren Town portion measuring approximately 2.8 km.

In the backdrop of the blockade, a public meeting was held on August 9 in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang and NHIDCL officials to discuss the matter. Following assurance by the project implementing agency to look into the matter, the JAC temporarily suspended the indefinite bandh, before serving a 15-day deadline to respond to its demand, which expired on August 24.
