Dimapur, May 5 (EMN): Judicial Magistrate First Class of Wokha, Khrievono Seletsu, has convicted three persons namely Tsenlamo Odyuo, Chonbenthung Shitiri and RH Khalempam for extortion Under Section 384/34 IPC and sentenced to simple imprisonment for a period of one year.

According to a DIPR report, the three accused persons had, on March 27, 2021, stopped three trucks drivers and demanded an amount of INR 50. 000. But when they refused to pay, the accused persons seized the vehicle keys and mobile phones along with cash of INR 5700 and allowed the drivers to proceed to their destination.

It has quoted the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Wokha, as saying that taking note of the rampant extortion over a long period of time in the state, which has created a sense of fear and panic among the people particularly business community and commercial drivers, having a lenient approach towards the offence of extortion would only encourage the offenders to commit such offence in future. She, therefore, sentenced the three accused persons for imprisonment for a period of one year.

The prosecution was led by assistant public prosecutor of Wokha, Akatoli Achumi.
