Three Naga groups extend ceasefire with New Delhi

Dimapur, April 16 (EMN): Three Naga political groups—GPRN/NSCN, NSCN (R), and Khango-led NSCN (K)—have extended their respective ceasefire durations with the government of India.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the GPRN/NSCN informed that the yearly ceasefire agreement with New Delhi, which is due to expire on April 27, has been extended for further six months (till October 27).

“Whilst constantly deliberating for a lasting peace in the land of the Nagas with the involvement of the Naga people, normal proceedings between the GPRN/NSCN and GoI is unfortunately hampered due to unprecedented global Covid-19 pandemic crisis.

“However, on the April 16, in the spirit of seriousness to maintain chain of peace in the state and modalities of resolving issues, ceasefire between GPRN/NSCN and GoI which is due to expire on the April 27 is being mutually extended for a period of six months with effect from April 28 till October 27 with subjection to adherence to ceasefire ground rules,” it stated.

In a separate statement, the NSCN (R) also announced that its ceasefire agreement with the government of India has been extended for another six months, till October 27.

“Considering the cordial atmosphere maintained between NSCN (R) and GoI, and to honour the Naga people’s yearning for peaceful co-existence, we signs another extension of ceasefire…Meanwhile both parties agreed to adhere to the laid down ceasefire ground rules in all seriousness and fairness,” it stated.

The Khango-led NSCN (K) also issued a press release informing that the ceasefire period has been extended till October 17. 

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the yearly ceasefire agreement was signed in Kohima, and not in New Delhi.

“The ceasefire will be subject to adherence to the ceasefire ground rules mutually agreed and signed by the two sides. The ceasefire ground rules will be subject to mutual review and amendment with the involvement of both the parties,” it stated.
