TikTok says it has reached 1 billion monthly active users globally

Dimapur, September 27 (EMN): In a blog post on Monday, popular short-form video platform TikTok announced that it has hit 1 billion monthly active users globally.

Three months after Facebook announced that it had hit 2.9 billion monthly active users, TikTok, which is privately held and owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, became one of the few platforms to also reach the 1 billion mark.

In a blog post, TikTok wrote, “Today, we’re celebrating that mission and our global TikTok community. More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new. We’re honoured to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favourite stars.”

Despite being banned in several countries like India and former US President Trump’s attempt to ban the app in the US, the short-video platform has grown from strength to strength. In July of this year, TikTok became the first non-Facebook company to hit 3 billion global downloads, according to app analytics company SensorTower.

In June of this year, ByteDance was valued at $425 billion.

The company says that the majority of its users are from the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Southeast Asia markets, which is surprising since the app’s parent company ByteDance is headquartered in China. The app still remains banned in a number of countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

TikTok’s meteoric rise has forced rival companies like Facebook and Google to shift their focus to short-form video formats. Facebook-owned Instagram is heavily promoting Reels and Google-owned YouTube launched its own short-form video feature called YouTube Shorts last September.
