DIMAPUR — ATMA Tening block, Peren, conducted a demonstration programme along with a field day on pest and disease management on summer vegetable crops on August 24 at New Tesen village, Peren.
At the demonstration, the resource person, Matsungtoshi N Pongener, ATM Tening block, said that farmers should practice crop rotations, intercropping, and other cultural methods to control pest infections and not concentrate much on the use of pesticides. He also demonstrated how to use yellow sticky insect traps in a vegetable field.
On the same day, the block also held a capacity building programme on “Raja mirchi pickle making” for food security groups (FSGs) and self-help groups (SHGs) at New Tesen village.
Lily Tongeo, BTM, taught the trainees the step-by-step procedures for making Raja mirchi pickle. The training’s goal was to reduce losses and increase profits for farmwomen involved in Raja mirchi cultivation. Farmers were also taught the importance of proper packaging and labelling of their products.
On August 25, the block held a demonstration on the preparation of Brijamrita and its significance at Nkialwa village. ATM Kevichamsi Kaurinta, the resource person for the occasion, demonstrated the uses, benefits, and importance of natural farming. Altogether, 15 farmers attended the programme.
Tening block also conducted biosecurity and disease management training in piggery farming at Nkialwa Village on August 25.
ATM Rokozhalie Namdau presented a detailed presentation on bio-security measures in pig farming, housing systems, common pig diseases, care and management, vaccination, de-worming, feeds and feeding management, castration in field conditions, economics for profitable pig farming, and the importance of pig selection.
Medicines were also distributed among the farmers. In total, 17 farmers attended the programme.
