TSU leads tree plantation drive in Kohima to mark 75th anniversary

KOHIMA —The Tsütuonuomia Students’ Union (TSU), Kohima village, conducted a tree plantation drive on Saturday to commemorate its 75th anniversary at Tsutou Kharu, Seithogei.

The planting took place from Tsütuo Kharu to the Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS) in Kohima, covering a distance of 10 kilometres. Over 400 tree saplings were planted during the event.

The drive was jointly organised by TSU and the Kohima Forest Division under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

Addressing the event, Chisayi, District Forest Officer (DFO) of Kohima, highlighted the objectives of NCAP, commended the student community for their initiative to plant trees and emphasised that there is hope in society when young people take such initiatives. He expressed optimism that many others would replicate similar initiatives.

He also advised the TSU and other student unions to contribute positively to society and not allow themselves to be solely associated with strikes and agitations.

Furthermore, the DFO also called for a more proactive approach from society towards the environment and nature. He emphasised the importance of spreading awareness and encouraging contributions to the environment to ensure better air quality for all to breathe.

Thepfuzakie Suohu, secretary of the T Khel Council, in his brief speech, expressed appreciation for the efforts of the TSU. He also acknowledged the support of the DFO and staff for their contributions to the programme.

Kevisevolie Kevin Solo, convenor, TSU jubilee organising committee, underscored the need for everyone’s responsibility to plant trees considering the threat posed to nature. He noted that various other follow-up programmes and activities would be conducted throughout the year.
